The threat of plastics
99% of abandoned plastic ends up at the bottom of the sea.
8 million tons of plastic waste end up in the oceans every year.
If the data holds true, the oceans would contain more plastic than fish by 2050 according to UN data.
In 2018, global plastics production was 359 million tons, a weight similar to the approximate weight of the world's population.
Spain is the fourth largest producer of plastic in the European Union and, according to Greenpeace, only 30% of plastics are recycled in the country.
After restrictions on China's waste management policy came into effect, the amount of plastic waste imported from Europe and the United States was reduced by a factor of 10.
If you add up the production of plastic throughout history, by 2015 the world had already produced 7.8 billion tons of plastic, more than one ton of plastic per person in the world.
Of the 5 existing plastic islands, the largest is 3 times the size of France.
